The theme of this show, sense of place, was influenced by the interest in plein-air painting, The Slow Food Movement, and the idea of eating locally. Painting locally seemed to fit the idea of not searching “out there” for the best but seeing the beauty in our local environment.

I have had a wonderful year rediscovering the town I have called home since 1965. Painting outside directly from life (the definition of plein-air painting) required me to walk places that I have only glimpsed from my car.

When I paint outside I remember more than the scene I am painting. I remember the temperature, the presence of a breeze (there goes the easel!), and conversations with people while I paint. One such conversation led to the title “The Coach’s House is Purple Now.” Sounds I heard while painting are also imbedded in my memory of a scene. While painting several of these paintings the sound of train whistles was a continual reminder of my location- which was never that far from the train station.

Hopefully, I have conveyed a sense of place with these paintings and my work will give viewers a renewed appreciation of the variety of interesting places that exist right in our own backyard.
